What do I do?
My translation areas reflect my life and my values:
- Children’s literature – most genres and sub-genres
- Travel writing
- Sports writing – sports journalism
- Current affairs – news reporting
- Business storytelling (the magic’s in the message)
- Commercial – general business, fashion, sport, travel & tourism, arts
- Writing for audiovisual productions
- Translating for humanity
I like to think it’s all about the magic.
Words can create all sorts of magic, from the pages of a book in a reader’s hand, to turning a marketing campaign into a bit of marketing magic. Setting sparks alight in the minds of the public as they are touched by what you have to say.
THE MAGIC BOX, by Kit Wright
I will put in the box
the swish of a silk sari on a summer night,
fire from the nostrils of a Chinese dragon,
the tip of a tongue touching a tooth.
I will put into the box
three violet wishes spoken in Gujarati,
the last joke of an ancient uncle,
and the first smile of a baby.
I shall surf in my box
on the great high-rolling breakers of the wild Atlantic,
then wash ashore on a yellow beach
the colour of the sun.
From ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright

Writers put lots of things into their boxes – sights, sounds, smells, textures, colours, dreams, feelings,…. anything can, and will, go into their words. Children understand it. Readers feel it. I feel it too.
My job as a translator is to open the box and ….
“detach mind from self and enter the object, sharing its delicate life and feelings” … “the translation forms itself when the author’s words and the translator’s words become one”.
In other words, look beyond the words for the magic, then recreate both in English.
And as the ancient Japanese poet Boshu said, to truly understand something, to sense its magic, you have to live it. Live it to learn it.
“Learn about a pine tree from a pine tree, and about a bamboo stalk from a bamboo stalk.”
So whether your words were born of the simple desire to share a story, or with the more specific intent of promoting and selling a product, a place or a service, in order for the sparks to fly, it has to be something I am familiar with, am passionate about, maybe even identify with, and most importantly, care about.
